Creative Writing

One of the sections in the HSC English Belonging (Module 1) exam is creative writing, which is to demonstrate the student's understanding of the concept of Belonging. The piece of text is to be written for a particular audience, purpose and context. Students may be asked to write a narrative, a feature article, an interview, a speech or a report.

To get top marks, students are to organize, develop and communicate their ideas by using sophisticated language appropriate to purpose, audience and context. If the question asks to compose a short story for a children magazine, use words that are familiar to children. If the question asks to compose a news report, be formal and don't use slang terms.

This part of the website will be focusing on writing a short story.

Nothing can help you learn to write if you don't read short stories. In order to prepare for this section, read as many short stories as you can and take note of the style. Analyze how the author had used small words for great effectiveness. Pay attention to how characters are developed, how dialogues are written, and how plots are structured.

Inspirations can hit you anytime so take notes. If you are making it up on the day of the exam, brainstorm on a blank page. Then do more brainstorming about the concept of Belonging. What does it mean to you? How is it portrayed? You may consider doing our Belonging Exercise in the Area of Study tab. Remember to stay away from the obvious and be creative until you are confident your idea would hit the examiners in the face.

Organize your thoughts into a plan. Determine the order in which the events take place. Give traits to your character that are believable. And follow the steps of having an exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
